These areas are
accessible from the limestone steps
entering the home (lower level). The floors have been
finished in a Charles Rennie Mackingtosh-inspired
finish. It is solid concrete (Skimstone). The flowers,
rose, and tulips are characteristic of designs from the
turn of the century. Despite being true to the age of
the home, the design is timeless, and very
modern-looking and bright. All (hidden) basement brick
walls were re-pointed, and new floor poured in 2005 as
part of complete renovation of the old walls and
foundation.
The basement features a full bathroom,
bedroom (which was used as an office with this owner),
and front area. The owners used the front area for
viewing films, and the walls are wired for 7-speaker
surround sound compatible with most home entertainment
systems. The turret has wall-mounted holders for films,
and seating with built-in storage. The windows in the
turret are curved (slumped glass), and feature stained
glass headers.
The stairs feature hand-carved stair brackets, and
the balusters and treads are original and fully
restored. The back door showcases brilliant-cut glass
that was original to this home. The back area has had
its wall (in some sections) replaced with glass brick to
allow in more light. The original fireplace has been
fully restored. An ornate British firebox and decorative
side tiles have been added.
This basement was last rented out to a tenant in
1997. The unit can be rented out again, though a
kitchenette will need to be added. The basement includes
a stacked washer-dryer unit. The DSL gateway router and
firewall are also located in the rear of the basement.
The basement has two Ethernet jacks.
The basement has its own entrance and security panel
controls. It has a very sturdy wrought iron security
door for added protection at both the front and rear of
the home. The back door provides access to the alley (as
a fire exit). The basement is not separately metered.
