Living and Dining Areas
These areas on on
the first floor accessible from the limestone steps
entering the home. You first enter into a small foyer
featuring the original encaustic tiles on the floor and
a copper ceiling. The alarm system controls are also
located in the foyer. You enter the main living room
through an enormous set of foldable doors, 9' tall. Upon
entering, you can view the complete first floor, from
the front turret to the back entrance into the kitchen.
This open design is ideal for entertaining. The stairs
are located within 5' of the grand doors, and features
an octagonal newel post in walnut with highly ornamental
antique brass newel light with etched shades.
Most
eye-catching are the fireplace and fixtures. The
fireplace is in oak with a deep brown-rose stain with
copper quartz tiles. The fireplace features two enormous
round columns with carvings throughout. It has to be
seen to be appreciated; the graining of the wood is
exquisite. Floor and stairs are of oak. The floor was
just refinished in April 2007. The stairs were rebuilt
to remove squeaks in 2005. The home features its
original balusters and handrails.
The fixtures are converted Victorian gas fixtures in
antique brass featuring exquisite filigree work (made
using wax castings). Victorian reproduction sconces have
been added for additional light. Crystal sconces are
located in the front grand room. Original mahogany
fluted moldings have been retained going into the
kitchen. A guest bathroom is located at the rear near
the entrance to the kitchen. It features a three-part
Victorian wallpaper design in cream and chocolate
colors.
The living area features walls in a light beige, with
wallpapers (used sparingly) in warm silver and mid-tone
beiges. Accent ceiling tiles and ceiling medallions are
in a warm silver color, so that the ornamental carvings
are slightly reflective.
The stairs have a full wall of original panel molding
underneath them, where each panel is approximately 18 by
24 inches, in beautifully grained oak. These panels span
the full wall under the stairs. The stairs feature the
original balusters and hand rail.
The front turret, with its curved glass windows,
heavy oak trim, curved valence, and stained glass
windows, is an ideal place for piano, sculpture, or
other focal piece. Picture rail is located around the
entire room, for hanging of your artworks. The cornice
trim is ornate, and a 5" frieze spans the room.
